The warm Polynesian spirit and open-sea sense of adventure is back in “Moana 2,” but little of the original’s humor or catchy songs finds its way into this heartfelt but lackluster sequel set three years after the original, writes Associated Press Film Writer Jake Coyle in his review

  • By JAKE COYLE - AP Film Writer

The warm Polynesian spirit and open-sea sense of adventure is back in “Moana 2,” but little of the original’s humor or catchy songs finds its way into this heartfelt but lackluster sequel set three years after the original.

“Moana 2,” which opens in theaters Wednesday, was originally put into development as a streaming series before it was rerouted the big screen. Curiously, though, it’s not scale or spectacle lacking here. Directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller have made an often dazzlingly animated film that is, visually, a step up from 2016’s “Moana.”

Ex-TV host Charlie Rose settles sexual harassment lawsuit years after his #MeToo-era ouster

  • By MICHAEL R. SISAK - Associated Press

Former TV host Charlie Rose has resolved a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by three women in the wake of his #MeToo-era ouster from CBS News in 2017 and the cancellation of his long-running, eponymous PBS talk show. In settling, the plaintiffs said they assign no “ill intent” to Rose and realize now that his conduct could be subject to interpretation. Lawyers for Rose and the women filed court papers this week confirming that the lawsuit has been resolved. An online court docket listed the case as settled. The terms were not disclosed. The lawsuit had been set to go to trial Monday in Manhattan.

No. 5 Notre Dame visits USC with Playoff berth in sight before 95th edition of this famous rivalry

  • By GREG BEACHAM - AP Sports Writer

No matter the stakes or the personalities involved, the fabled intersectional meeting between Notre Dame and Southern California remains one of the most tantalizing Saturdays on every college football calendar. It’s even better when both the Fighting Irish and the Trojans are in the national title race, of course. But the rivals will settle for the interesting stakes of this meeting. No. 5 Notre Dame is one win away from an 11-1 regular season and a prime spot in the first 12-team playoff. The Fighting Irish just need to add one more disappointment to a lost season for the Trojans.

Lamar Jackson is 23-1 against the NFC. The Philadelphia Eagles present a formidable test

  • By NOAH TRISTER - AP Sports Writer

Lamar Jackson has almost never lost against the NFC. This week he faces a major challenge. Baltimore’s matchup with Philadelphia on Sunday pits the Ravens’ top-ranked offense against the Eagles’ No. 1-ranked defense. It may be the biggest test this season of Jackson’s dominance against the NFC. He’s 23-1 as a starter against teams from that conference — but Philadelphia arrives in Baltimore this weekend with a seven-game winning streak and a formidable defensive front.

El Salvador president proposes ending country's metals mining ban

  • AP

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele has proclaimed himself in favor of mining gold in the Central America country and called his nation’s 7-year-old ban on metals mining “absurd.” It immediately puts in jeopardy the historic prohibition. He wrote on the social platform X Wednesday that the unmined gold would be “wealth that could transform El Salvador.” Bukele’s party controls El Salvador’s Congress by a wide margin and his political opposition has been devastated, so a formal proposal to end the ban is unlikely to meet much resistance. In 2017, El Salvador banned all metals mining above ground and below.

Martinez parades goalkeeper awards and justifies them with wonder save for Villa in Champions League

  • By STEVE DOUGLAS - AP Sports Writer

Emi Martinez began the night by walking onto the field with his children and parading a pair of trophies for being the world’s best goalkeeper for the last two years. He finished it by producing an astonishing save that vindicated those awards. The Argentina international illuminated a 0-0 draw between his Aston Villa team and Juventus in the Champions League by plucking the ball from behind him and scooping it off the goal line to deny Francisco Conceição what could have been the winner. Replays showed the ball was almost entirely over the line before Martinez hooked it clear.
